The gaps between individual letters. If the gaps are larger than normal it's called loose kerning and if it's smaller it's called tight kerning.

In printing lingo a kicker is a piece of information or a piece of an article that is printed below a headline. Kickers are also common on the web where they are typically followed by a "more" link that takes the reader to the full article.
